Pregnancy Announcement

Jon and I spent a week in Portugal for Thanksgiving 2019 to attend a friend’s wedding. At the time, I had an inkling I might be pregnant but I didn’t want a positive pregnancy test to ruin all the celebratory fun while traveling (wine + raw seafood galore). At the end of the week, we flew from Lisbon to London together because I had work in London. Jon spent less than 24 hours with me in London before heading to the airport for his flight back to NYC. When he left for the airport in the early morning, I went to the pharmacy to pick up a pregnancy test. The results line on the first test was so faint I took a second test to make sure —but yes, I was pregnant! I couldn’t wait to get to NYC later that week and share the news with Jon.
*Do yourself a favor and get a pregnancy test that spells out “Pregnant/Not Pregnant” because the ones with lines are so confusing!

How I Told Jon: Nov 30, 2019

By some will of God, Jon’s original flight from London to NYC was delayed 10 hours that day. He had spent a frustrating 12 hours at the airport so we decided to delay his flight to the next day. While I waited for Jon to get back from the airport, I debated whether to share my new little secret with him or to wait until we were back home in NYC. Jon arrived back to the hotel room close to midnight, exhausted from a lame day at the airport. I knew that this news would turn his mood around. I hid the pregnancy in my eyeglasses case and told Jon I had bought new glass frames that day. (We had gone window shopping the day before.) Excited to see the frames, Jon opened the case to see the pregnancy test. He had the sweetest reaction, jumping up and down the the bed. This man was born to be a father!

How We Told Our Sisters: Dec 21, 2019 & Jan 7, 2020

For both our sisters, we wrapped up the pregnancy test into a cookie box and gave it to them to open, under the guise of a Christmas present.
The first person we told about the pregnancy was my sister at 7 weeks. At this point, I hadn’t even been to my OB-GYN yet for any ultrasound or confirmation of the pregnancy. All we had was a pregnancy test that I retook back in NYC. My doctor had wanted to see me at week 8 but we were going to be out of town for Christmas for 2 weeks at my in-law’s. I wouldn’t be able to see a doctor until we got back. Because we didn’t want to raise any suspicion with my in-laws during our holiday, we decided to tell my sister earlier. My sister had the most visceral reaction when she first found out - bawling her eyes out and questioning where the pregnancy test even came from. She helped to conceal my extreme fatigue, and new eating/drinking habits during my first trimester.
The second person we told was Jon’s sister at 10 weeks. This was immediately following our first ultrasound. When my SIL opened the cookie box, she was in pure shock. It was doubly exciting because not only did we get to share the news with her, we also showed her the first sonograms and a video of baby’s heartbeat.

How We Told Our Parents: Jan 25, 2020

The end of my first trimester (Week 12) coincided perfectly with Lunar New Year. That’s when we told our parents about Baby Hu. While our sisters knew for a bit longer, we wanted to be sure that Baby was healthy and growing well before breaking the news to our parents.
My parents love to travel so we decided to make the reveal travel-themed. I made fake boarding passes for “AGIONDA AIR” (아기온다 - “baby is coming” in Korean). The travel date was baby’s due date, the origin/destination: JFK to GRNDPA and JFK to GRNDMA. It was hilarious watching my parents trying to decipher where they were going. My mom was very confused why they were going to different destinations. For the first 10 minutes, they thought my dad was going to “Ground Pennsylvania (PA)” and my mom was going to “Ground Massachusetts (MA).” When my dad finally figured out that it was “Grandpa” and “Grandma” he leaped up with joy, completely pushed my mom aside and gave us a hug. The entertainment value of this moment was 10/10.

To tell Jon’s parents, we coordinated a group Facetime with Jon’s sister for Lunar New Year. In order for us to capture his parents’ reactions, we sent them a sonogram of the baby to another phone and made them open the file while leaving the Facetime on. They were so caught off guard it took them a minute to react but their smiles filled the screen. It was so special to be able to share this moment together even though they’re miles away!

How We Told Our Cousins/Friends: Feb 14, 2020

Valentine’s Day on Week 15, Jon and I were ready to share the news with our cousins & friends. We created a simple Valentine to send to them. One of my girlfriends took me out to get a pedicure and I had Galentine’s Day dinner with my cousins.
It really didn’t hit us that we were pregnant until we started telling our extended family and friends.

The World!: March 18, 2020

By Week 20, Jon and I shared the news with our coworkers, and we posted photos of our gender reveal party on the interwebs. At this halfway point of pregnancy, the countdown to Blobby’s due date was in full swing.

During a global pandemic, our little Blobby brought us a continued sense of joy & excitement. Today, I can’t believe he’s already 1 month old! We hope you continue to grow healthy & strong, little one! Also, please let your parents sleep. :)

Gender Reveal - Decor & Activity Ideas

The weekend before NYC went into official quarantine back in March of this year, we were lucky enough to get our family together for a gender reveal celebration. We kept our pregnancy under wraps for a good 15 weeks and didn’t do our gender reveal until 20 weeks so it was super exciting to share the news in person and show off my teeny tiny (what I thought was a) bump.

In Korea, expecting parents will nickname their baby bump, referred to as a 태명 “Tae•myung.” Usually, parents go with names that are meaningful for the future of their child like 튼튼이 to wish that the baby grow healthy & strong, or 사랑이 to be loved/lovely, or 대박이 to be an amazing success. Us… we’re just weird and decided to name our baby 봉봉이- or Blobby in English - literally a floating blob because that’s all I could see at our first ultrasound.

*Actual footage of me at our 1st doctor’s appointment:

Party Prep/Decor:

Our doctor wrote down Baby Hu’s gender in an envelope and we had our cousin safe keep it until the party. She was our secret coordinator & ordered us confetti canons & a BEAUTIFUL cake for the reveal.

We kept the decor traditional with white, pink & blue theme:
- Easiest one & done Gender Reveal pack from Amazon
- White balloons
- Helium Tank & Balloon Weights
- Dollar Shop Boy or Girl Cups & Napkins
*Supplemented with things we already had at home: Frames, Mason Jars, Calendar Blocks, Twinkle Lights, Onesies, Little Vases, Rubber Duckies, Drink Tins, Punch Dispenser

Themed Snacks:

- Colored Hershey’s Bars
- Pink Lemonade + Blue Fanta (We couldn’t find the Blue Hawaiian Punch!)
- Pamplemousse & Pure LaCroix

Simple Activities:

- Voting station: We created one with paint chips and holiday photos from our Lisbon trip.
- Photo Booth + props
- Guess Who? Mommy or Daddy - So many fun versions online you can simply google & print off!
- Telephone Charades: We played with 2 teams (one with Jon as captain & one with me as captain). Took turns acting out baby related activities. Ex) Giving Baby a Bath, Taking Photos of Baby, Checking Baby’s Temperature, Water Breaking

We’re having a… BOY!!!

Honestly, I was 80% sure we were having a boy based on the 3D ultrasound scan we had earlier that week. He had his little fist up in a boxing position and has been constantly kicking and punching me since he could squirm!

As exciting a time this pregnancy journey has been, this time has also been a sobering reminder of the importance of good health and social courtesy. Due to COVID concerns, we had a few high risk aunties, uncles, & cousins who weren’t able to physically be present with us. Jon’s parents couldn’t make it out to NYC from Arizona either so we facetimed them in for the big reveal. We have still not been able to see them. :(

I can’t believe this was over 4 months ago. Today, we are 9 days away from 봉봉 Blobby’s due date! Come out, come out, wherever you are! We are ready for you little one.

Love, Umma MH

Our 2 Year Wedding Anniversary

Celebrating our second year of marriage was quite different than celebrating our first year. This year, there was no beautiful hotel, no endless glasses of wine, & no exploring new cities together. This year, we are going on 18 weeks of quarantine* because of a world pandemic, settling into a new apartment, & 37 weeks pregnant… so, just a little bit different.
*You think you know someone until you’re both working from home on one table surface in a 500 sq ft studio apartment, taking calls from the bathroom. FUN TIMES.

As surreal as the circumstances surrounding this day are, it doesn’t change the fact that this past year was another year of growth for us, both individually and as one unit. God has continually challenged us to reflect on what it means to be husband & wife in the larger puzzle of “this world” vs. just “our world.”

We may be celebrating 2 years of marriage, and almost 10 years of being together, but the reality is that there was a time when we didn’t know each other. During that time, our families, specifically our parents, were the ones who shaped and molded us to be who we were when we first met. While we were dating, we were both people who put our families first above each other - parents, siblings, cousins. After getting married, our families just became one big, loving, amalgamation.

This year more than ever, we’ve had to rely on our families for their support and wisdom as we entered this next chapter of our lives. It has been an amazing blessing to have most of our family within a 20 min~1.5 hour radius from us. We’ve been able to celebrate moments big & small, discuss current events in our city and country, run simple errands for each other (with masks on), and look back on childhood memories, dreaming of the day we can pass those experiences onto the next generation!

Whatever husband checklist I had at age 16 went out the window when I met Jon. After all the time we’ve been together, I can say that no personality test or horoscope, could’ve predicted the trajectory of our relationship: the experiences of dating through college, our first jobs, long distance, new jobs, frustrations of living without an electric drill... etc. Over time, my curiosity, the limits of my patience, my sense of joy & gratitude, my stubbornness (to name a few) have all evolved for the better.

Looking back on our wedding day, marriage was not a means to an end, not what “naturally” happened because we were dating for 8 years or something that we felt societally pressured to do. Marriage for us was one thoughtful step in a long term commitment to each other and our families.

We choose daily to love each other, to communicate honestly, to be transparent with our feelings, to make compromises, to respect each other’s ambitions & occasional laziness, to celebrate life. No matter the circumstances, we consciously work together toward living as disciples of God, as children to our parents, and as husband & wife.

This past year: Jon started a new job, we attended weddings and funerals, we hosted dinners and wine nights, we traveled to Portugal, London, Boston & AZ, we found out we were pregnant(!), celebrated our friends’ kids, quarantined without killing each other, moved to an apartment with laundry in-unit, realized how ill-equipped we are to be parents but know that it will happen anyways.

We may not be poppin’ bottles in Napa like we were last year but I’m just as happy with my sparkling cider and chocolate chip banana bread on our comfy couch. Happy 2 year anniversary to my best friend!

Picture Perfect Lisbon, Portugal

From a quiet sunrise to hidden alleys and iconic blue tiles, every corner of Lisbon is beyond picture perfect. We had the privilege of exploring the historic neighborhood of Alfama one morning and fell in love!

Here are some of the places we explored:
- Miradouro das Portas do Sol: During the weekdays, the city is quiet until 9am. We arrived at this landing at 8am, about half an hour after sunrise (in November) and there were very few people around.
- Miradouro Santa Luzia: This viewpoint landing is like a secret garden with a beautiful tile mural, red doors, and a pagoda that overlooks the hills of Alfama. Our photographer said that in the springtime, the flowers and trees are in full bloom so the colors are even more stunning.

**From here, take the Santa Luzia Lift down to the first floor & explore the back streets of Alfama**

lisbonphoto2019.jpg

After a quick sweater change in the lift lobby, we continued our journey down the alleys, towards Praça do Comércio & Lisbon City Hall.

Looking back, I’m doubly grateful that we closed out 2019 with this amazing trip - celebrating our friend’s wedding, exploring a new city , and sharing my London life together!

Jon is definitely getting more comfortable in front of the camera. I guess 9+ years of photoshoots makes a man feel some way. There is hope, ladies! Force a man to smile in enough photos and one day, they’ll find a way to appreciate the memories you create!

MacARTHUR Place Hotel - Sonoma, CA

To celebrate our one year wedding anniversary this past July, we booked a 2 night stay at the newly renovated MacARTHUR Place in Sonoma, CA. After our honeymoon, we were skeptical that we could ever take a relaxing vacation again but boy, were we proven wrong. Not only were the rooms and grounds at the MacArthur Hotel serene and beautiful, but the town of Sonoma and the wineries in Sonoma Valley also blew us away.

We arrived in the early afternoon before our check in time. Thankfully, the hotel had ways to keep us busy. We grabbed a cup of coffee at The Porch, and rented the hotel’s Blix electric bikes* to head to the Sonoma town center for lunch. Biking takes on a whole new meaning when your gear is cute & there’s a motor doing all the work for you. I’m a convert!! We circled Sonoma Square a few times before deciding to eat at Basque Boulangerie Cafe.
*Bikes are available on a first come, first serve basis at no cost.

Within the hour, we were able to check into our room. The rooms are separated into little cottages, with each cottage housing a few residences. It felt like we had entered into a cute townhouse neighborhood with it’s own outdoor pool, spa, gym and outdoor lounging areas. We were smitten!

Our hotel room was bright and cozy - complete with a desk nook, an outdoor patio and fireplace. (Can’t wait to visit in the winter to use it.) Also, this bed… the king size bed was so comfy that I didn’t even hear Jon snoring!

The staff was also super attentive, helping us with our luggage, providing us extra blankets to sit outdoors and arranging our dinner reservation at the hotel restaurant Layla. If we weren’t committed to visiting wineries in Sonoma, we could have easily spent our whole trip just relaxing at the hotel.

It’s rare for us to plan vacations where we just relax & spend time enjoying each other’s company but our stay at the MacARTHUR Place Hotel changed our travel theory. We are such city people that we usually seek to visit cities that have a hustle & bustle, packing our itineraries by the hour. Now, we can’t wait to find the next place to go, curl up in bed & do nothing.

Hope this inspires you to travel differently than you’re used to. Let me know your favorite travel/hotel destinations in the comments below!

Love, MH
